Advanced Clinical Practitioners- the future of medicine

Did you catch our director Ben on BBC Midlands today this afternoon?

Ben was talking about the outstanding care and use of Advanced Clinical Practitioners in his day job within the emergency department with both staff and patient feedback being excellent!

Ben works as a middle grade in a busy Emergency Department as well as one of our ACPs.

PACT use ACPs equivalent to registrar/middle grade level when qualified, which even includes the ability to prescribe medications ensuring our patients get the best care

Kicking high @ karate- black belts for martial arts medicine!

PACT had an amazing time last weekend covering the National Championships for English Karate Federation. Our social media platforms have been overwhelmed with feedback from members of the event.
“Matt and Cheryl were amazing”
“Can they be at every competition”
“Thank you for the advanced expertise you brought to the competition”

These were just some of the comments.
Having #kickedforglory with World Taekwondo Championships and now kicking high in Karate. We are on our path to becoming #blackbelt master of martial arts medicine.

Staff uniform

All our health clinicians are easily identifiable by the uniform they wear which is shown below. We place this image in all our medical centres and field hospitals so visitors and patients are aware who is treating them.

The exception to this photo are first aiders and first responders who are easily identifiable by a light grey polo shirt.

Urinalysis

Our registered healthcare professionals such as Paramedics, Nurses and above are all trained in urinalysis to help diagnose a variety of common illnesses such as a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). Once we have diagnosed this we are then able to administer correct anti-biotics or even provide a prescription from our prescribing nurses, paramedics and doctors.

Blood Gas Analysis!

PACT uses a variety of equipment to help assess, diagnose and treat a wide variety of illnesses. We have our own blood gas analysis machine which allows our clinicians to treat the critically ill patients accordingly. We deploy this to all our big events and is placed within our resuscitation department ready to be used in the event of a cardiac arrest or any other serious medial or traumatic emergency.

Teaching @ WTC 2019

While at the World Taekwondo, we met a lovely Taekwondo club, Toddington and Cotswold Taekwondo who managed to teach some of our staff two styles of kicks! In return we taught them Basic Life Support including DRABC and Chest compressions!

An amazing club with very enthusiastic members and teachers!

Ultrasound Scanners @WT19

During the World Taekwondo Championships we have been using an Ultrasound scanner from MIS Healthcare- Samsung to treat, diagnose and assess the need for admission to the local Emergency Department.

Throughout the week, 98.3% of patients with musculoskeletal related injuries were discharged on scene, with the same treatment they would have received in an Emergency Department. Our Advanced Care Team diagnosed Olympic and World Champions with metacarpal fractures and ligament injuries, as well as looking at healing injuries.

Via our team of clinicians, physiotherapists, sports therapists and a wide range of other specialities, athletes received immediate treatment as well as the right care they deserve.

In addition to using the ultrasound on our patients we also took the time to teach staff the use of ultrasound in cardiac arrest and trauma.

We will be using ultrasound more frequently at our events for these reasons.

World Taekwondo Championships 2019

Between the 11th and 20th May 2019, PACT have provided around 25 staff to the hundreds of athletes for the World Taekwondo Championships which saw 150 counties taking part.

The clinical team consisted of A&E consultants, Advanced and Emergency Care practitioners, Nurses, Paramedics, Ambulance crew’s and specialist practitioners such as Physiotherapist’s and a podiatrist.

Staff were providing 24 hour services throughout the week manning a walk-in-centre located at the athletes hotel to deal with minor illness and injuries. A fully equipped Emergency Department which was situated in the arena with ultrasound scanners, blood analysers, ECG machines and two fully equipped resuscitation bays. As well as the stationary facilities PACT had three frontline ambulances ready to transfer patients to local hospitals if needed and we had paramedic and nurse lead teams mat side to respond to incidents on the mat during fights.

The PACT team was able to prevent admissions to local hospitals by seeing and treating patients quickly and effectively.

We are very grateful for the support from World Taekwondo and the commissioned doctors. We also say a massive thank you to the wonderful medical team who provided outstanding care to over 150 athletes.

Safety Warning- Button Batteries!!

Although many healthcare professionals will sadly already be aware, button batteries can cause huge damage when ingested.

Button battery damage

Button battery damage

Often mistaken for sweets, children have been known to swallow these when picked up and either this is missed by parents or perhaps the seriousness of it not understood.

With the upcoming festive period the Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch have released a warning complete with videos demonstrating the issue.

Please help spread the message to friends and family so we can increase awareness of this risk.

Is it the weekend??

It might be for some- meanwhile at PACT our team is busy preparing a number of workstreams as demand for PACT services increases.

We have clinicians out in urgent care, hospital emergency departments whilst our management team work on our new contracts.

Excitingly we are also planning some first aid courses as we keep getting approached for these, as well as our popular advanced clinical CPD days. Busy busy!

PACT Education

As part of our varied services, two of the PACT Leadership Team have been teaching on behalf of Resuscitation Services UK today.

Teaching BLS at Birmingham Dental School they have used their extensive knowledge and experience to bring the subject to life and give a real world slant to the education.

Stay tuned to our website for announcements for our own upcoming courses - from first aid courses to specialist practitioner skill days.

Christmas Fingers...?

Careful this Christmas! *JOVIAL MEDICAL BULLETIN*

Some more medical amusement this festive period. Clicking your fingers when dancing can cause infections . . . It was reported in 1979 (yes, I know it's old news, but it's Christmas so let's show some festive cheer, keep reading, and let me have this one?)

Disco Felon (a felon is a painful purulent infection at the end of a finger) was said to be caused by repeated finger-clicking at discos. PACT's take-home message I hear you shout? Throw more shapes this Christmas and avoid over-eager clicking. You're welcome.
